Salary Packaging Australia: Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay with Tax and Super

Using the standard 38-hour week and 52 weeks, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours.

Converting Hourly to Annual Pay

If you earn an hourly wage or have a salary offer, the first step is to work out your annual gross pay. The standard formula used across Australia is:

Hourly rate × hours per week × 52

For full-time employees, Fair Work considers 38 hours per week as the ordinary hours. So the calculation becomes:

Hourly rate × 38 × 52

This gives you a simple annual figure. For example, the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. Multiplying by 38 and 52 gives $52,245.44 per year. If you work more or fewer hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. To estimate your gross fortnightly pay, multiply your weekly pay by two. Using the minimum wage example: $1,004.90 per week × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight. This can help you budget between pay cycles.

Understanding Your Pay: Tax, Medicare, and Super

Once you have your annual gross figure, you can estimate your take-home pay by subtracting tax and the Medicare levy. The 2026–27 resident tax rates are:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15¢ for each $1 over $1 over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30¢ for each $1 over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37¢ for each $1 over $135,000
  • $190,001 and over: $51,370 plus 45¢ for each $1 over $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. The tax-free threshold is included. Note that HELP repayments, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted in this estimate.

Superannuation Guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. It does not reduce your take-home pay. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. For example, if your annual salary is $80,000, your employer contributes an extra $9,600 to your super fund.

Salary Packaging Australia and How It Affects Your Tax

Salary packaging australia allows you to sacrifice part of your pre-tax salary for benefits like a car, laptop, or additional super contributions. This reduces your taxable income, potentially lowering the tax you pay. However, our estimate does not include salary packaging because the arrangements vary. For more details, see our page on super and packaging.

If you are considering salary packaging australia, remember that it can affect your super guarantee base and other entitlements. Always check with your employer or a financial adviser.

Average Pay vs Your Rate

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) for May 2026. Full-time adult ordinary time earnings are $2,083.70 per week. All employees total earnings (including part-time) are $1,579.20 per week. These are averages across all industries and states, not the median for your specific job. Your rate may be higher or lower depending on your award, enterprise agreement, or individual contract.

For award-covered employees, the Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides. Casual workers receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate. The National Minimum Wage for casuals is $33.05 per hour including loading.

Using the Timesheet

Our the timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add casual loading. It calculates your annual, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly gross pay. You can then see estimated tax and super. Remember, the result is an estimate based on the assumptions listed in the disclaimer.

For more detailed pay information, visit our pay guides or reference tables. You can also explore minimum wage, take-home pay, average pay, hourly conversion, casual loading, and job pay.

Disclaimer: Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual income before tax, super, and other deductions. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, the annual figure is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave entitlements. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). When using our timesheet, check the casual loading box to add it automatically. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading.

How is superannuation calculated on my salary?

Superannuation Guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid by your employer on top of your salary. It is not deducted from your pay. The maximum earnings base for super is $270,830 per year. For example, if your annual salary is $80,000, your employer contributes an extra $9,600 to your super fund. Salary packaging australia can also redirect pre-tax dollars into super, reducing your taxable income.
