How to Convert Hourly to Annual Pay with a 38-Hour Week, Fortnight, Tax, Super, and EV Salary Sacrifice

Annual gross pay is calculated as hourly rate × 38 hours × 52 weeks, assuming a standard full-time week.

Understanding the 38-Hour Week and Annual Conversion

If you earn an hourly wage, converting it to an annual figure helps you compare job offers or plan your budget. The standard formula used in Australia is:

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks

For a full-time employee, the typical week is 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. This article assumes a 38-hour week unless stated otherwise. You can also calculate your fortnightly pay by multiplying your weekly gross by 2.

For example, if your hourly rate is $30.00:

  • Weekly gross = $30.00 × 38 = $1,140.00
  • Fortnightly gross = $1,140.00 × 2 = $2,280.00
  • Annual gross = $1,140.00 × 52 = $59,280.00

This calculation assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. It is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates vs Casual Loading

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is the minimum for employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. Many industries have award rates that are higher. The Fair Work Commission sets these rates, and you should check the relevant pay guides for your industry.

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. For the minimum wage, that becomes $33.05 per hour. The casual loading page explains how this works. On the timesheet, you can enter your base hourly rate and check a box to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading.

Superannuation Guarantee is paid on top of your gross earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super rate is 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For a minimum-wage full-time employee, super adds $26.44 × 38 × 52 × 12% = $6,269.57 per year (approximately).

Tax and Medicare for 2026–27

Your annual gross pay is used to calculate income tax and the Medicare levy. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax rates are:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

The Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. The calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed here. This is an estimate; your actual tax may differ.

Superannuation Guarantee

Your employer must pay super into a fund on your behalf. It is 12% of your ordinary earnings (usually your gross pay) and is paid on top of your salary. The maximum contribution base for 2026–27 is $270,830, meaning super is only paid on earnings up to that amount. The calculator estimates super at 12% of ordinary earnings, stopping at that cap.

EV Salary Sacrifice and Its Impact

An EV salary sacrifice arrangement allows you to pay for an electric vehicle and its running costs from your pre-tax salary. This reduces your taxable income, potentially lowering your tax bill. However, it also reduces the base on which your super guarantee is calculated (since super is based on ordinary earnings after sacrifice). The Hourly to Annual calculator does not deduct salary sacrifice, so you should adjust your expected tax savings separately. If you are considering an EV salary sacrifice, consult a tax professional or use the super and packaging page for more details.

Using the Timesheet Calculator

The timesheet, our home page, lets you enter your base hourly rate. A checkbox adds 25% casual loading on top. The calculator then shows your weekly, fortnightly, and annual gross pay, along with estimated tax, Medicare, and super. It uses the assumptions and rates described above. Remember that this is an estimate and does not include penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice.

For further reference, see the minimum wage page for current rates, the take-home pay page for net pay estimates, and the average pay page for industry averages from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. The ABS Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026 show full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week, and all employees total earnings of $1,579.20 per week (including part-time). These are averages, not medians for a specific job.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How does EV salary sacrifice affect my take-home pay?

EV salary sacrifice lets you pay for an electric vehicle and running costs from pre-tax salary, reducing your taxable income. This can lower your annual tax but also reduces your super guarantee base (since super is calculated on ordinary earnings after sacrifice). The Hourly to Annual calculator does not deduct salary sacrifice, so you should adjust your expected tax savings separately.

What is casual loading and how is it applied?

Casual loading is an extra 25% on top of the base hourly rate, as set by the Fair Work Ombudsman for casual employees. On the timesheet page, you can check a box to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; the calculator adds it for you.

What are the 2026–27 tax brackets for residents?

For 2026–27, the tax-free threshold is $18,200. Then 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000, 30% from $45,001 to $135,000, 37% from $135,001 to $190,000, and 45% above $190,000. Medicare levy is generally 2%. The calculator uses these rates with the full tax-free threshold.
