How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay: 38-Hour Week, Fortnight, Tax, and Southgate Salary Packaging

For a 38-hour week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours per week and 52 weeks per year.

Understanding the 38-Hour Week and 52-Week Year

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, converting between the two helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. In Australia, the standard full-time week is 38 hours, and the year is 52 weeks. The basic formula is:

Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52

For example, if you earn $30 per hour and work 38 hours each week, your annual gross is $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. This assumes you work the same number of hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

The Fortnightly View

Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. Using the same example, weekly pay is $30 × 38 = $1,140, so fortnightly is $2,280. This can help you match your pay cycle to your bills and budgeting.

Minimum Wage, Awards, and Casual Loading

Australia has a National Minimum Wage set by the Fair Work Commission. From 1 July 2026, the minimum is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. That works out to $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. If you are a casual employee, you get a 25% loading on top of the base rate, making the minimum casual rate $33.05 per hour. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading into the timesheet – use the base rate and tick the casual loading checkbox instead.

Many industries have award rates that are higher than the minimum. The Fair Work Ombudsman provides pay guides for specific awards. If you are covered by an award, your minimum hourly rate may be different, and you may also be entitled to penalty rates for weekends, nights, or public holidays. The conversion formula still applies, but your actual pay may vary week to week.

Tax and Medicare

Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) applies progressive tax rates. For the 2026–27 financial year, the resident tax brackets are:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

In addition, most residents pay the Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. (The single reduction thresholds for 2026–27 were not confirmed here, so the 2025–26 thresholds are used in the estimate.)

For example, on a $59,280 annual gross, your tax would be:

  • $0 on first $18,200
  • 15% on $26,800 ($18,201 to $45,000) = $4,020
  • 30% on $14,280 ($45,001 to $59,280) = $4,284
  • Total tax = $8,304
  • Medicare levy (2%) = $1,185.60
  • Total deductions = $9,489.60, leaving take-home pay of about $49,790.40.

Superannuation Paid on Top

Your employer must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings, on top of your salary. This is not deducted from your pay; it is an extra payment into your super fund. The maximum contribution base for the 2026–27 year is $270,830. So if your annual gross is $59,280, your super contribution is $7,913.60 (12% of $59,280). If your earnings exceed the cap, the employer stops contributing once you reach the cap.

Southgate Salary Packaging

Southgate salary packaging is a way to arrange your pay to include benefits like a car, laptop, or additional super contributions, often with tax advantages. When you use Southgate salary packaging, your employer may reduce your taxable income by packaging certain items, reducing your tax. However, the conversion formula on this site does not include salary packaging. You should check how Southgate salary packaging affects your net pay.

Using the Timesheet

To get a quick estimate of your annual, fortnightly, and weekly pay, use the timesheet. You enter your base hourly rate and tick the casual loading if applicable. The timesheet uses the 38-hour week and 52-week year. The result includes tax and Medicare levy. It also shows the maximum contribution base for super.

Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I calculate my annual salary from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time role, assume 38 hours per week. For example, $30 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $59,280 per year before tax and super.

Does the National Minimum Wage include casual loading?

No. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. Casual employees receive an additional 25% loading, making the minimum casual rate $33.05 per hour. The loading is paid on top of the base rate, not included in it.

How is superannuation calculated on my pay?

Superannuation Guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your salary. For example, if your annual gross is $80,000, your employer contributes an extra $9,600 into your super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830.
