From Hourly to Annual: How the Fair Work Minimum Wage and Casual Loading Affect Your Pay
For a full-time employee on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, working 38 hours per week, the annual gross pay is approximately $52,277.44 before tax and super.
Understanding the Hourly to Annual Conversion
When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, converting between the two helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. The standard method is simple: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52 weeks. In Australia, the typical full-time week is 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. This article uses that assumption unless stated otherwise.
For example, the fair work minimum wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour. For a 38-hour week, the weekly pay is $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.90. The annual gross pay is $1,004.90 × 52 = $52,277.44. This is before tax, Medicare, and super.
Why 38 Hours and 52 Weeks?
Australia’s National Employment Standards set 38 hours as the maximum ordinary hours for a full-time employee before overtime applies. Using 52 weeks assumes you work every week of the year without unpaid leave. If you have unpaid leave or work part-time, adjust the weekly hours accordingly.
Fortnightly Pay
Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For the minimum wage, that’s $1,004.90 × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight. This can help you match your pay cycle.
Casual Loading and Super Paid on Top
If you are a casual employee, you receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate. The casual minimum rate is $26.44 × 1.25 = $33.05 per hour. This loading compensates for not receiving paid sick leave or annual leave.
Important: When using our timesheet, you enter your base hourly rate. If you are casual, tick the box to add 25% loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading.
Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee is 12% of your gross pay (including casual loading if applicable), up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For a full-time worker on the minimum wage, super adds about $6,273 per year. This is not deducted from your pay; it is an employer contribution.
Tax and Take-Home Pay
Your take-home pay depends on tax brackets and the Medicare levy. For 2026–27, the resident tax rates are:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
- 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
- 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. For a single person earning $52,277, tax would be approximately $5,092 plus Medicare $1,045, leaving about $46,140 after tax (excluding any offsets). Use our take-home pay guide for more details.
Award Rates vs Minimum Wage
The fair work minimum wage is the legal floor. Many employees are covered by awards that set higher minimum rates for specific industries or roles. Awards also include penalty rates, allowances, and overtime. If you are under an award, your minimum hourly rate may be higher than $26.44. Check the relevant pay guides or reference tables for your award.
Average Earnings for Comparison
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reports Average Weekly Earnings. In May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 annually. All employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week, or $82,118 annually. These are averages, not medians for a specific job. For job-specific pay, see our job pay page.
Super and Salary Packaging
Super is calculated on ordinary time earnings. If you salary sacrifice, your super may be calculated on a reduced ordinary earnings amount. The super and packaging page explains how packaging affects your super guarantee.
Using the Timesheet Calculator
Our timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate and choose whether to add casual loading. It then shows your weekly, fortnightly, and annual gross pay, plus estimated tax and super. Remember: the annual figure assumes 38 hours per week, 52 weeks per year, with no unpaid overtime or penalty rates.
Important Disclaimer
Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
