Investment Banker Salary: Converting Hourly Rates to Annual Pay for 2026–27
For a full-time employee on a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top and tax deducted according to the 2026–27 resident scale.
Converting an Investment Banker Salary: From Hourly to Annual
When you’re considering an investment banker salary, you might see offers quoted as an hourly rate, a salary offer, or a package including super. This guide explains how to convert an hourly rate to annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures using a standard 38-hour week and a 52-week year. We rely on official sources: the Fair Work Ombudsman, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), and the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).
The Basic Formula
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks.
For a full-time employee working 38 ordinary hours per week, the calculation is straightforward. For example, if you earn $50 per hour, your annual gross is $50 × 38 × 52 = $98,800. This assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, and no allowances.
Fortnightly and Weekly Pay
Your weekly pay is hourly rate × 38. Your fortnightly pay is simply weekly pay × 2. Using the same $50/hour example: weekly = $1,900, fortnightly = $3,800. Many employers pay fortnightly, so it’s useful to know this figure.
National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates vs Market Rates
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week for 38 hours). Casual employees receive a 25% loading, making the casual minimum $33.05 per hour.
For the banking, finance, and insurance sector, the pay guides from the Fair Work Ombudsman set minimum award rates under the Banking, Finance and Insurance Award 2020 (MA000019). As of the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2026, the award rates are:
| Classification | Weekly rate | Hourly rate |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | $1,024.70 | $26.97 |
| Level 2 | $1,119.10 | $29.45 |
| Level 3 | $1,182.10 | $31.11 |
| Level 4 | $1,241.40 | $32.67 |
| Level 5 | $1,291.80 | $33.99 |
| Level 6 | $1,446.80 | $38.07 |
These are minimums. An investment banker salary is typically far above Level 6. According to the ABS Average Weekly Earnings (May 2026), full-time adult ordinary time earnings are $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 annually. Investment bankers often earn significantly more, but the award provides a legal floor.
Casual Loading
If you are a casual employee, you receive an additional 25% on top of the base hourly rate. This loading compensates for not receiving paid leave. When using our timesheet, you can check the “casual loading” box to add 25% to your base rate. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; the tool adds it for you.
Superannuation Paid on Top
Employers must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings into a super fund. This is on top of your gross salary, not deducted from it. For 2026–27, the maximum contribution base is $270,830, so super is capped at $32,499.60 per year. For example, on a $150,000 annual gross, your employer adds $18,000 in super. See super and packaging for more details.
Tax on Your Salary
The ATO’s 2026–27 resident tax rates apply:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 + 30% on excess over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 + 37% on excess over $135,000
- $190,001+: $51,420 + 45% on excess over $190,000
Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (using 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed). This is an estimate only; your actual tax may vary due to deductions, offsets, or the Medicare levy surcharge.
Putting It All Together: Example for an Investment Banker Salary
Suppose you are offered an hourly rate of $80 as a full-time employee. Your annual gross = $80 × 38 × 52 = $158,080. Fortnightly = $6,080. Super (12%) = $18,969.60 (since $158,080 is below the $270,830 cap). Tax (using the 2026–27 scale) would be approximately $31,020 + 30% on ($158,080 – $135,000) = $31,020 + $6,924 = $37,944, plus Medicare levy of $3,161.60, leaving a take-home of about $116,974.40. Use our take-home pay tool for a more precise estimate.
Important Notes
This conversion assumes a consistent 38-hour week, 52 weeks per year. It does not account for unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, salary sacrifice, or the Medicare levy surcharge. For award-covered employees, always check the specific award for penalty rates and overtime. The reference tables provide detailed award rates for various industries.
If you are comparing an investment banker salary, remember that market rates often exceed award minimums. The figures here are a starting point for your own calculations.
