Minimum Wage in Aus: Hourly to Annual Pay for a 38-Hour Week
Based on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, a 38-hour week yields $1,004.90 per week, $2,009.80 per fortnight, and $52,254.40 per year before tax and super.
Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay
If you earn an hourly wage or have a salary offer, the simplest way to compare them is to convert your hourly rate to an annual figure. The standard formula is:
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52
This article assumes a 38-hour week, which is the full-time benchmark used by the Fair Work Ombudsman and the Australian Bureau of Statistics. If you work a different number of hours, adjust the formula accordingly. For a quick estimate, you can use the timesheet, where you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add casual loading.
The National Minimum Wage in Aus
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage set by the Fair Work Commission is $26.44 per hour. For a 38-hour week, that equates to:
- Weekly: $1,004.90
- Fortnightly: $2,009.80 (weekly × 2)
- Annual: $52,254.40
This is the legal minimum for employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. Many workers are covered by award rates, which can be higher. Always check your specific award or agreement. For more details, see our minimum wage page.
Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting
Many Australian employers pay fortnightly. Knowing your fortnightly amount helps with budgeting and comparing job offers. For the minimum wage, the fortnightly gross is $2,009.80. After tax and Medicare, the take-home amount will be lower. Use our take-home pay guide for estimates.
Tax and Superannuation
Tax is calculated using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- $0 – $18,200: nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15¢ for each $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: 30¢ for each $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: 37¢ for each $1 over $135,000
- $190,001+: 45¢ for each $1 over $190,000
A Medicare levy of 2% applies (using the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds as the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed). For a minimum-wage earner on $52,254.40, the estimated tax is $6,196.32 plus Medicare of $1,045.09, leaving a net annual pay of approximately $45,013. This is an estimate only; it does not include HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.
Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12%, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For the minimum wage, the employer contributes an extra $6,270.53 per year into your super fund. Super is not deducted from your gross pay; it is an additional cost to your employer. Award Rates and Average Earnings
The National Minimum Wage is the floor, but many employees earn more under award rates or enterprise agreements. The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports Average Weekly Earnings for full-time adult ordinary time as $2,083.70 per week (May 2026). This is an average across all industries and occupations, not a median for a specific job. All employees total earnings (including part-time) average $1,579.20 per week. For industry or state averages, refer to our average pay page.
Casual Loading
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. The casual minimum wage is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). For a 38-hour week, a casual earns:
- Weekly: $1,256.10
- Fortnightly: $2,512.20
- Annual: $65,317.60
When using a calculator, enter the base rate (e.g., $26.44) and tick the casual loading box. Do not enter a rate that already includes loading. See our casual loading guide for more.
Important Assumptions
The annual pay shown here is an estimate based on the formula hourly × hours per week × 52. It assumes:
- The same hourly rate every week
- No unpaid overtime
- No penalty rates or allowances
- No salary sacrifice
Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted.
This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax. For personalised advice, consult a qualified professional or use official tools from the Fair Work Ombudsman, Australian Taxation Office, or your super fund.
Using the Timesheet Calculator
To convert your own hourly rate, visit the timesheet. Enter your base hourly rate. If you are a casual employee, check the box to add 25% casual loading. The calculator will show your weekly, fortnightly, and annual figures before tax and super. You can then estimate your take-home pay using our hourly conversion page.
Remember that award rates may be higher than the minimum. Always check your pay guide or agreement. For more resources, see our pay guides and reference tables.
Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
