Understanding the Minimum Wage in Australia: Hourly to Annual Conversion with Casual Loading and Super

The National Minimum Wage in Australia from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1004.90 per week for a 38-hour week, giving an annual gross of approximately $52,270.40 before tax and super.

Understanding the Minimum Wage in Australia

When you're trying to work out what your hourly rate means in annual terms—or vice versa—the minimum wage in Australia is a key reference point. It sets the floor for pay and helps you compare job offers, budget your income, and plan for tax and super. This guide explains how to convert an hourly rate to an annual figure, what casual loading and super mean, and how the National Minimum Wage fits into the bigger picture.

The National Minimum Wage

From 1 July 2026, the Fair Work Commission has set the National Minimum Wage at $26.44 per hour. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, that works out to $1004.90 per week. Multiply that by 52 weeks and you get an annual gross of approximately $52,270.40.

It's important to note that this is the minimum for employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. Many industries have award rates that are higher. The figure above is a national average minimum—not a median for any specific job. If you're looking for job-specific pay, check the relevant award or the job pay reference.

Casual Loading and Super Paid on Top

Casual employees get a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. For the minimum wage, that means casuals earn $33.05 per hour. This loading compensates for not receiving paid leave entitlements like annual leave or sick leave.

Superannuation is separate. The super guarantee requires your employer to pay 12% of your ordinary time earnings into a super fund, on top of your gross pay. For the minimum wage, that's an extra $6272.45 per year (12% of $52,270.40), up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not deducted from your hourly rate; it's an additional cost to the employer.

Converting Hourly to Annual: The Formula

The standard formula is:

Annual gross = hourly rate × hours per week × 52

This assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For a full-time worker, we assume 38 hours per week (the standard full-time week under the Fair Work Act). If you work part-time or different hours, adjust accordingly.

Example: If you earn $30 per hour and work 38 hours per week:

  • Weekly: $30 × 38 = $1,140
  • Fortnightly: $1,140 × 2 = $2,280
  • Annual: $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280

If you're casual, add 25% loading first: $30 × 1.25 = $37.50 per hour, then apply the same formula.

Fortnightly Pay and Tax

Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross is simply your weekly pay multiplied by 2. For the minimum wage example:

  • Weekly: $1,004.90
  • Fortnightly: $2,009.80

Tax is calculated on your annual income using the 2026–27 resident tax rates:

  • $0–$18,200: nil
  • $18,201–$45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
  • $45,001–$135,000: 30% on excess over $45,000
  • $135,001–$190,000: 37% on excess over $135,000
  • Over $190,000: 45% on excess over $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (generally). For a single person earning $52,270.40, tax would be roughly $5,092 (using 2026–27 rates) plus Medicare of $1,045, leaving about $46,133 after tax. This is an estimate; your actual tax depends on your circumstances. Use the take-home pay tool for a personalised estimate.

Super and Packaging

Super is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. The 12% super guarantee applies to most employees. For the minimum wage earner, that's an extra $6,272.40 per year into super. If you earn above the maximum contribution base ($270,830), super only applies up to that limit.

Salary packaging (sacrificing part of your salary into super or other benefits) can change your taxable income. This guide does not include salary packaging. See super and packaging for more.

Award Rates vs National Minimum Wage

The National Minimum Wage is the legal minimum for award-free employees. If you're covered by an award, your minimum pay is likely higher. For example, the Hospitality Award or the Retail Award have specific rates for different classifications. Always check the relevant award or enterprise agreement. The pay guides page can help you find your award.

Casual Loading: What It Means for Your Conversion

When converting a casual hourly rate to annual, remember that the loading is already included in the rate you're paid. Never tell the reader to type a rate that already includes casual loading—the calculator has a checkbox to add 25% loading on top of the base rate. If you're given a rate that says "$33.05 casual rate," that's the loaded rate. The base rate is $26.44, and the loaded rate is $33.05. The casual loading reference explains this.

Using the Timesheet

The timesheet is the home page. You type your base hourly rate, and a checkbox adds 25% casual loading on top. It assumes 38 hours per week and shows annual, fortnightly, weekly, and hourly figures. It also estimates tax and super. It's a tool, not a determination.

Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, salary sacrifice. Super estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, stops at $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax 2026–27 resident scale with full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses 2025–26 single reduction thresholds (2026–27 not confirmed). HELP, Medicare levy surcharge, salary packaging not deducted. Estimate, not determination.
