Minimum Wage New Zealand vs Australia: Rates, Conversion, and Comparisons
The Australian National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week, with casual loading of 25% on top.
Understanding the National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
Australia's National Minimum Wage is set by the Fair Work Commission and reviewed annually. From 1 July 2026, the rate is $26.44 per hour, which equates to $1,004.90 per week for a full-time employee working 38 hours. This is the minimum pay for employees not covered by an award or registered agreement.
However, most employees are covered by an industry or occupation award that sets higher minimum rates, including penalty rates, allowances, and overtime. Award rates vary widely, so it's important to check the correct pay guides for your classification.
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour. This loading is paid on top of the base rate, not included in it. When using our timesheet, you enter the base hourly rate and tick the casual loading checkbox to add the 25%.
Superannuation Guarantee contributions are paid on top of your ordinary earnings at 12% (from 1 July 2026). The employer must pay this into your super fund; it is not deducted from your wages. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year.
How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual, Fortnightly, and Weekly Pay
The standard formula for converting an hourly rate to annual gross pay is:
Hourly rate × hours per week × 52 = annual gross pay
For full-time employees, we assume a 38-hour week, as per the Fair Work Act. If you work different hours, adjust accordingly.
Example: National Minimum Wage
- Hourly rate: $26.44
- Weekly pay: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.90
- Fortnightly pay: $1,004.90 × 2 = $2,009.80
- Annual gross: $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44
For casual employees, the weekly pay would be $33.05 × 38 = $1,255.90, and annual $65,306.80.
Example: Award Rate
If your award rate is $30.00 per hour, full-time:
- Weekly: $30 × 38 = $1,140
- Fortnightly: $2,280
- Annual: $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280
Remember, these figures are before tax and super. The take-home pay calculator can estimate your net income after deductions.
Minimum Wage New Zealand: A Comparison
New Zealand sets its minimum wage annually under the Minimum Wage Act 1983. From 1 April 2026, the adult minimum wage is $23.95 per hour. There are also lower rates for starting-out workers and trainees at $19.16 per hour.
For a 40-hour week (standard full-time in NZ), the adult minimum weekly pay is $958, and fortnightly $1,916. The previous year (from 1 April 2025) the adult rate was $23.50 per hour.
Comparing the two countries:
- Australia's National Minimum Wage ($26.44) is higher than New Zealand's adult minimum ($23.95) by about $2.49 per hour.
- However, many Australian award rates are significantly higher, and casual loading adds another 25%.
- New Zealand's starting-out and training wages are much lower, at $19.16, compared to Australia's junior rates which vary by award.
Both countries require employers to pay superannuation (KiwiSaver in NZ) on top of the minimum wage. In New Zealand, the employer contribution cannot be included as part of the minimum wage.
Tax and Superannuation Considerations
Australian Tax 2026–27
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) resident tax rates for 2026–27 are:
- $0 – $18,200: Nil
- $18,201 – $45,000: 15c for each $1 over $18,200
- $45,001 – $135,000: $4,020 plus 30c for each $1 over $45,000
- $135,001 – $190,000: $31,020 plus 37c for each $1 over $135,000
- $190,001+: $51,370 plus 45c for each $1 over $190,000
Medicare Levy is generally 2% of taxable income, with reductions for low-income earners based on 2025–26 thresholds (since 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this reference).
Superannuation Guarantee
Employers must pay 12% of your ordinary time earnings into a super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. This is paid on top of your salary, not deducted from it. For the National Minimum Wage example ($52,245.44), the super contribution would be $6,269.45 per year.
New Zealand Tax
New Zealand uses a PAYE system similar to Australia. The IRD calculator can estimate deductions. KiwiSaver contributions are deducted from wages, and employers contribute at least 3% on top.
Using the Timesheet and Pay Guides
Our the timesheet allows you to enter your base hourly rate and optionally add casual loading. It calculates weekly, fortnightly, and annual figures, and estimates tax and super based on the latest ATO and Fair Work data.
For award-specific rates, refer to the pay guides or reference tables. You can also explore average pay figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to benchmark your earnings.
Remember, the calculations here assume a consistent 38-hour week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. Always consult your employment agreement or a professional advisor for your specific situation.
Open the same rate on the home timesheet. Read the reference tables before treating a figure as your pay.
