Convert Hourly to Annual Pay with Non Profit Salary Packaging

For a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top and tax deducted using 2026–27 rates.

Understanding Hourly to Annual Pay

When you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, converting between the two helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. In Australia, the standard full-time week is 38 hours, so the basic formula is:

Annual gross ≈ hourly rate × hours per week × 52

For a 38-hour week, that becomes hourly × 38 × 52. For example, $30 per hour gives $59,280 per year before tax and super. This calculation assumes you work the same hours every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. It's a starting point, not a final pay figure.

Why 38 Hours?

The Fair Work Ombudsman and most awards define full-time as 38 hours per week. Some agreements may differ, but 38 is the standard for conversion. If you work part-time or casual, adjust the hours accordingly. Our timesheet lets you type a base hourly rate and optionally add 25% casual loading – never type a rate that already includes loading.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per 38-hour week. Casual employees get at least 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour. However, most jobs are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets higher minimums. The Fair Work Commission reviews award rates annually. Always check your specific award or agreement – our pay guides can help you find the right one.

Casual Loading and Super

Casual loading (usually 25%) is paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave. If you're casual, your hourly rate should already include this loading – our calculator has a checkbox to add it automatically. Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings at 12% (from 1 July 2026) up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For example, on $59,280 gross, super would be about $7,113.60 per year.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. Your fortnightly gross is simply weekly pay × 2. For a 38-hour week at $30/hour, weekly is $1,140, so fortnightly is $2,280. This can help when comparing salary offers that quote annual figures.

Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports Average Weekly Earnings (May 2026) for full-time adult ordinary time at $2,083.70 per week. That's about $108,352 per year. But this is an average across all industries and states – not a median for your job. All employees total earnings (including part-time) average $1,579.20 per week. These figures show how much ordinary-time earnings vary. Your job may pay above or below these averages. For more context, see our average pay page.

Tax and Medicare

For 2026–27, the resident tax rates are:

  • Nil up to $18,200
  • 15% from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% above $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. It does not deduct HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.

Non Profit Salary Packaging

If you work for a non profit organisation (charity, health, education), you may be eligible for non profit salary packaging. This lets you sacrifice part of your pre-tax salary for benefits like rent, mortgage, car expenses, or meal cards, reducing your taxable income. It can significantly increase your take-home pay. However, our conversion does not include salary packaging – it's an estimate only. For details, see the Australian Taxation Office or your employer. Our super and packaging page has more information.

Using the Timesheet

Our timesheet is the home page. You type a base hourly rate (without casual loading) and check the box if you're casual. The calculator shows annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures, plus estimated tax and super. Remember: the result is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I calculate my annual salary from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by hours per week (usually 38 for full-time) then by 52 weeks. For example, $30/hour × 38 × 52 = $59,280 gross per year. This assumes no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or salary sacrifice. Super is paid on top at 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the $270,830 contribution base.

What is non profit salary packaging and how does it affect my pay?

Non profit salary packaging allows employees of eligible charities or not-for-profits to sacrifice part of their pre-tax salary for benefits like rent, mortgage, or car expenses, reducing taxable income. This can increase take-home pay. However, our calculator does not deduct salary packaging; it's an estimate only. Check with your employer or the Australian Taxation Office for limits.

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and award rates?

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour (or $1,004.90 per 38-hour week). Award rates are industry- or job-specific minimums set by the Fair Work Commission, often higher than the NMW. Casual employees get at least a 25% loading on top of the base rate. Always check your award or agreement for your correct minimum.
