Hourly to Annual Salary: Australian Pay, Tax, Super, and the NZ Minimum Wage
For a 38-hour week, annual gross = hourly × 38 × 52. The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44/hour, casual $33.05 with loading. Super is 12% on top.
How to Convert Hourly to Annual Salary
To convert your hourly rate to annual pay, use the formula: annual gross ≈ hourly × hours per week × 52. This assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For a standard full-time role, we assume 38 hours per week, as per the National Employment Standards. This gives annual = hourly × 38 × 52.
For example, if your rate is $30.00, annual = $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. This is before tax and super.
Fortnightly Pay
Your fortnightly gross is weekly × 2. Weekly = hourly × 38. So fortnightly = hourly × 38 × 2 = hourly × 76. Using $30, fortnightly = $2,280.
Tax and Medicare
Tax is calculated on annual gross using the 2026–27 resident scale: nil to $18,200; 15% to $45,000; 30% to $135,000; 37% to $190,000; 45% above $190,000. Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income, but reduced for low incomes. Use the tax-free threshold. This is an estimate only.
For $30/hour, annual $59,280. Tax: $0 on first $18,200; 15% on $26,800 = $4,020; 30% on $14,280 = $4,284; total tax $8,304. Medicare 2% of $59,280 = $1,185.60 (assuming no reduction). After tax and Medicare, net $49,790.40.
Superannuation
Super guarantee is 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top. It stops at the maximum contribution base of $270,830. For $30/hour, super = $30 × 38 × 52 × 12% = $7,113.60 per year, added to salary.
The National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. Casual employees receive 25% loading, making it $33.05 per hour. Award rates may be higher. Super is paid on top of the minimum wage.
The NZ Minimum Wage
For readers familiar with the NZ minimum wage, note that Australia's rates are different. The NZ minimum wage is set by the New Zealand government and is not covered here. This guide focuses on Australian pay. The NZ minimum wage is a separate system, but you can use the same conversion formula with your NZ rate. However, tax and super rules differ.
Using the Timesheet
Our the timesheet allows you to enter your base hourly rate. A checkbox adds 25% casual loading on top. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading. The timesheet calculates annual, fortnightly, and weekly figures, including estimated tax and super.
For more details, see our minimum wage topic and pay guides. Also check take-home pay and super and packaging for further information.
Important Assumptions
This conversion assumes no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.
Summary
