Pro Rata Salary Calculator: Turn Your Hourly Rate into Annual Pay with Tax and Super
For a 38-hour week, annual gross is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top and tax estimated using 2026–27 resident rates.
How to Use a Pro Rata Salary Calculator for Your Hourly Rate
If you are paid by the hour or work part time, a pro rata salary calculator helps you see what your pay looks like on an annual basis. It also estimates the tax you will owe and the super your employer must contribute. This article explains the formula, the assumptions we make, and the key Australian rates you need to know.
The Basic Formula
Annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks.
We assume a standard full-time week of 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. If you work fewer hours, the result is your pro rata annual salary – the amount you would earn if you worked full time at that hourly rate. For example, a rate of $30 per hour gives:
$30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280 per year.
This is before tax and super. The calculation assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice.
National Minimum Wage and Award Rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is set by the Fair Work Commission. Many employees are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that pays more. Award rates vary by industry and classification. Our minimum wage page has more detail.
If you are comparing a salary offer to your current hourly rate, use the pro rata salary calculator to see the annual equivalent. Remember that award rates often include casual loading, allowances, and penalty rates that the calculator does not capture.
Casual Loading
Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. The loading is paid on ordinary hours. On the timesheet (our home page), you can check a box to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes the loading – always start with the base rate from your award.
For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). If you are casual, your annual gross using the pro rata salary calculator would be:
$33.05 × 38 × 52 = $65,306.80.
But remember, casual employees do not accrue annual leave or sick leave, so the loading compensates for that.
Tax and the Medicare Levy
Once you have your annual gross, the calculator applies the 2026–27 resident tax rates:
- Nil tax on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus the Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. The calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate. This means the Medicare levy estimate may differ slightly for low-income earners.
For example, on a gross salary of $59,280:
- Tax: $5,092 (15% on $26,800 after the $18,200 threshold) + $4,284 (30% on $14,280) = $9,376
- Medicare levy: $1,185.60 (2% of $59,280)
- Total tax and Medicare: $10,561.60
- Net annual pay: $48,718.40
This is an estimate. It does not include HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging. See our take-home pay page for more detail.
Super Guarantee
Employers must pay super guarantee of 12% of your ordinary earnings, on top of your salary. The super is not deducted from your pay – it is an additional contribution. The maximum earnings base for super in 2026–27 is $270,830. If your annual gross exceeds that, super is capped.
Using the $59,280 example, super would be $7,113.60 per year (12% of $59,280). This goes into your super fund, not your pocket. Our super and packaging page explains how salary sacrifice can affect this.
Fortnightly Pay
Many employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross, multiply your weekly pay by 2. For a 38-hour week at $30 per hour, weekly pay is $1,140, so fortnightly is $2,280. The calculator does not show fortnightly figures directly, but you can easily derive them.
Using the Pro Rata Salary Calculator
On the timesheet page, you type your base hourly rate. The calculator shows your annual gross, estimated tax, Medicare, net pay, and super. It assumes a 38-hour week. If you work different hours, adjust the hours per week field (if available) or mentally scale the result.
Remember that the pro rata salary calculator is a tool for comparison. It does not replace a formal pay slip or tax return. Always check your award or agreement for the correct rate. For industry averages, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports Average Weekly Earnings: full-time adult ordinary time was $2,083.70 per week in May 2026, and all employees total earnings (including part-time) were $1,579.20 per week. These are averages, not medians for your job. See our average pay page for more.
