Salary Calculator Sydney: Convert Hourly Rates to Annual, Fortnightly & Take-Home Pay

Annual gross pay is hourly rate × hours per week × 52, assuming a standard 38-hour full-time week.

Understanding the Basics: Hourly to Annual

Whether you're using a salary calculator sydney tool or doing it manually, the formula is straightforward: annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52. This assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. For full-time employees, the standard week is 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Act. If your hours differ, simply substitute your actual weekly hours.

For example, an hourly rate of $30.00 gives:

  • Weekly: $30.00 × 38 = $1,140.00
  • Fortnightly: $1,140.00 × 2 = $2,280.00
  • Annual: $1,140.00 × 52 = $59,280.00

Our the timesheet lets you enter your base hourly rate and optionally add 25% casual loading. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – use the checkbox instead.

The National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage (NMW) as the legal floor. From 1 July 2026:

  • Ordinary rate: $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week for 38 hours)
  • Casual rate (including 25% loading): $33.05 per hour

Many employees are covered by award rates that are higher than the NMW. Awards specify minimum pay for particular industries or roles, and may include penalty rates for weekends or nights. Always check your award via pay guides or the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. This loading is paid on top of the ordinary hourly rate, not included in it.

Using the Salary Calculator Sydney for Your Situation

A salary calculator sydney tool helps you compare job offers or plan your budget. Start with your base hourly rate – whether that's the NMW, an award rate, or a negotiated salary. If you are casual, tick the casual loading box to see the loaded rate.

Remember: superannuation is paid on top of your gross pay. The calculator estimates super at 12% of ordinary earnings, up to the $270,830 maximum contribution base (2026–27). This is not deducted from your take-home pay.

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Your take-home pay depends on the 2026–27 resident tax rates and the Medicare levy (2%). The tax-free threshold is $18,200. Tax brackets:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on excess over $135,000
  • Over $190,000: 45% on excess over $190,000

Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income, with reductions for low-income earners (using 2025–26 single thresholds as 2026–27 reductions were not confirmed). The calculator does not deduct HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging arrangements. For a detailed estimate, see our take-home pay page.

Superannuation Guarantee

From 1 July 2026, the super guarantee rate is 12% of ordinary earnings. Ordinary earnings include your base hourly rate, casual loading, and most allowances, but not overtime. The maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year – earnings above that do not attract compulsory super. Your employer must pay this into your super fund on top of your gross pay. For more, visit super and packaging.

Differences in Ordinary-Time Earnings

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes Average Weekly Earnings (AWE) data. For May 2026:

  • Full-time adult ordinary time earnings: $2,083.70 per week
  • All employees total earnings (including part-time): $1,579.20 per week

These are averages across all industries and states, not medians for any specific job. They reflect the mix of full-time and part-time workers, as well as industry composition. Your own earnings may be higher or lower depending on your occupation, experience, and location. The average pay page provides more context.

Fortnightly and Weekly Breakdown

Many Australians are paid fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, simply double your weekly amount. For example:

  • $30/hour × 38 hours = $1,140/week
  • Fortnightly: $2,280
  • Annual: $59,280

If you are paid weekly, multiply by 52 to get annual. The hourly conversion page helps you go the other way – from annual salary to hourly rate.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week (usually 38 for full-time) and then by 52 weeks. For example, $30 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $59,280 per year. Use the salary calculator sydney on this site to do it instantly, with options to add casual loading.

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and award rates?

The National Minimum Wage (NMW) is the legal minimum for all employees not covered by an award or agreement. From 1 July 2026 it is $26.44 per hour ($1,004.90 per week for 38 hours). Award rates are higher minimums set by the Fair Work Commission for specific industries or occupations. Always check the relevant pay guide if you are under an award.

How is superannuation calculated on my pay?

Superannuation guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, paid on top of your gross pay. For 2026–27 the maximum contribution base is $270,830 per year. So if your annual ordinary earnings are $80,000, your employer must contribute an extra $9,600 into your super fund. This is not deducted from your pay.
