Smart Salary App: Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay with Tax and Super
For a 38-hour week, the annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 1,976 hours (38 × 52).
How the Smart Salary App Converts Hourly to Annual Pay
Understanding your annual salary from an hourly rate is straightforward when you know the formula. The smart salary app does the heavy lifting for you: multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks in a year. For most full-time employees, the standard week is 38 hours, so the annual gross pay becomes hourly × 38 × 52 = hourly × 1,976. This is the figure used by the Fair Work Ombudsman and the Fair Work Commission when setting the National Minimum Wage.
The 38-Hour Week Assumption
The hourly conversion in the smart salary app defaults to 38 hours per week because that is the ordinary hours for a full-time employee under most modern awards. If you work part-time or your award specifies different hours, you can adjust the weekly hours in your own calculations. The app also shows a fortnightly amount (weekly pay × 2), which is useful if you are paid every two weeks. Remember, the annual figure assumes you work every week of the year with no unpaid leave.
National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
From 1 July 2026, the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 for a 38-hour week, according to the. However, most employees are covered by an award that sets higher minimum rates. The Fair Work Ombudsman publishes pay guides for each award, which include classification-specific rates, allowances, and penalty rates. The smart salary app uses the base hourly rate you enter, so if you are on an award rate, enter that rate. The app does not automatically apply award penalties or allowances; those are separate adjustments.
Casual Loading Explained
If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a casual loading of 25% on top of the minimum hourly rate. The smart salary app has a checkbox that adds this loading automatically. For example, the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 becomes $33.05 per hour with loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; let the app add it. This loading compensates for the lack of paid leave entitlements such as annual leave and sick leave. The Fair Work Ombudsman confirms that casual employees must receive at least the base rate plus 25% loading.
Superannuation Paid on Top
Superannuation is an additional cost for employers and an important benefit for you. The smart salary app estimates super at 12% of your ordinary time earnings, paid on top of your gross pay. For the 2026–27 year, the super guarantee rate is 12%, applied up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. If your annual salary exceeds that, super is capped. The app shows the super amount separately so you can see the total employment cost. Remember, super is not deducted from your pay; it is an extra contribution your employer makes.
Tax and Medicare on Your Annual Figure
The writing angle of the smart salary app is to give you a realistic picture of your take-home pay after tax and the Medicare levy. Using the 2026–27 resident tax scale:
- Nil tax on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
The Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income. The app uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of development. This means the estimate is slightly conservative for some lower-income earners. The app does not deduct HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary sacrifice arrangements. For a detailed breakdown of your net pay, see the take-home pay page.
Using the Fortnightly View
Many employers pay fortnightly. The smart salary app calculates your fortnightly gross as weekly pay × 2. For example, if your hourly rate is $30, your weekly pay for 38 hours is $1,140, and your fortnightly gross is $2,280. Tax and Medicare are estimated on the annual figure and then divided by 26 fortnights, so the fortnightly net amount is an approximation. This can help you budget between pay cycles.
Important Limitations
The smart salary app is a guide, not a binding determination. It assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds. The app does not deduct HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging. Always consult your employer, a tax professional, or the Australian Taxation Office for personalised advice.
