Use a Salary Packaging Calculator Australia to Understand Your Hourly to Annual Pay

Based on the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour and a standard 38-hour week, your annual gross pay would be approximately $52,246, before tax and super.

How to Convert Hourly Rate to Annual Salary

If you are paid by the hour or have a salary offer, understanding your annual equivalent helps you compare jobs and plan your budget. The basic formula is straightforward: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. This gives your gross annual pay before any deductions.

For a standard full-time role, we assume a 38-hour week as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. So if you earn $30 per hour, your annual gross would be $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. The same calculation works for part-time or casual hours—just use your actual weekly hours.

National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates

Australia’s National Minimum Wage (NMW) is set by the Fair Work Commission. From 1 July 2026 it is $26.44 per hour for full-time and part-time employees, or $1,004.90 per week for a 38-hour week. Casual employees receive an additional 25% loading, making the casual NMW $33.05 per hour.

However, many workers are covered by an award or enterprise agreement that sets a higher minimum rate. Award rates vary by industry and classification. For example, a retail employee may earn more than the NMW depending on their level. The figures on this site are averages or minimums, not a median for your specific job. For your exact rate, check your award or pay guide.

Fortnightly Pay

If you are paid fortnightly, simply multiply your weekly gross by two. Using the NMW example: $1,004.90 per week × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight before tax. This is useful for budgeting when your pay cycle is fortnightly.

Tax and Medicare

Your annual gross is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office applies progressive tax rates for 2026–27:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
  • 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
  • 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Most residents also pay a 2% Medicare levy. The reduction thresholds for singles are based on 2025–26 figures as the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed in this estimate. Our take-home pay estimator accounts for these deductions.

Superannuation

Employers must pay super guarantee contributions of 12% on your ordinary earnings, on top of your salary. This is not deducted from your pay—it goes into your super fund. However, the contribution is capped at the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, on a $60,000 salary, your employer adds $7,200 in super. Use our super and packaging page to see how super affects your total compensation.

Salary Packaging and Your Take-Home Pay

Salary packaging (or salary sacrifice) lets you use pre-tax income for benefits like a car, laptop, or additional super contributions. This reduces your taxable income and can increase your net pay. Our calculator does not include salary packaging, so if you are considering it, you should use a salary packaging calculator Australia to see the effect on your after-tax income. The result depends on your employer’s policy and the type of benefit.

Using the Timesheet

To quickly convert your own hourly rate to annual, fortnightly, or weekly figures, try our the timesheet. Enter your base hourly rate—do not include casual loading. If you are a casual, check the box to add 25% loading on top. The tool then shows your gross annual, monthly, fortnightly, and weekly pay, plus estimated tax and super. It assumes a 38-hour week unless you change the hours.

Important Notes

Annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

For award-specific rates, see our pay guides or reference tables. For the current minimum wage, visit minimum wage. For casual loading details, see casual loading. And for average earnings across industries, the Australian Bureau of Statistics reports full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week (May 2026 average) and all employees total earnings of $1,579.20 per week (includes part-time). These are averages, not medians for your job.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52. For a standard full-time week of 38 hours, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your gross annual pay before tax, super, and other deductions.

What is the difference between the National Minimum Wage and an award rate?

The National Minimum Wage is the legal minimum for employees not covered by an award or agreement. As of 1 July 2026 it is $26.44 per hour. Award rates are industry- or occupation-specific minimums set by the Fair Work Commission, often higher than the NMW. Casual employees also receive a 25% loading on top of their base rate.

Does your calculator include salary packaging?

No. Our calculator estimates gross pay, tax, and super but does not deduct salary packaging arrangements. To see how packaging affects your take-home pay, use a dedicated salary packaging calculator Australia that accounts for your specific benefit structure.
