Salary Packaging Meaning: How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

This guide uses a 38-hour week and 52-week year to convert your hourly rate to annual gross pay, then estimates tax and super.

How to Convert Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

The Basic Formula

To turn your hourly rate into annual gross pay, use this simple formula:

Hourly rate × hours per week × 52 = annual gross pay

For a full-time employee working 38 hours a week, the calculation becomes:

Hourly rate × 38 × 52

This assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, allowances, or salary sacrifice. It is a standard estimate used by the Fair Work Ombudsman and the Australian Taxation Office.

Understanding Salary Packaging Meaning

Salary packaging meaning refers to an arrangement where you give up part of your pre-tax salary in exchange for benefits like a car, extra super contributions, or childcare. This reduces your taxable income and can affect your take-home pay. However, the conversion on this page does not include salary packaging – it is a straightforward hourly-to-annual estimate. If you use salary packaging, your actual annual pay for tax purposes may be lower than the gross figure shown here. For more details, see our super and packaging page.

National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The Fair Work Commission sets the National Minimum Wage each year. From 1 July 2026, the minimum is $26.44 per hour, which gives a weekly pay of $1,004.90 for 38 hours. Many employees are covered by awards or enterprise agreements that pay more than the minimum. Always check your specific award or agreement – the minimum wage page has more information.

Casual Loading

If you are a casual employee, you are entitled to a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. This compensates for not receiving paid leave such as annual leave and sick leave. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25).

Important: When using the timesheet calculator on this site, you type your base hourly rate (without casual loading) and then tick the checkbox to add 25% loading. Never type a rate that already includes casual loading. Learn more about casual loading.

Fortnightly Pay

Many employers pay fortnightly. To estimate your fortnightly gross pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. For example, at the minimum wage:

  • Weekly: $26.44 × 38 = $1,004.90
  • Fortnightly: $1,004.90 × 2 = $2,009.80

This can help you budget between pay cycles.

Tax and Medicare

The Australian Taxation Office uses a progressive tax scale for residents in 2026–27:

  • Nil tax on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

In addition, most residents pay a Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. The estimates here use the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of calculation. The tax shown is an estimate only – it does not include HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.

Super Guarantee

Your employer must pay superannuation on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee rate is 12% for 2026–27, up to a maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is paid on top of your gross pay, not deducted from it. For example, if your annual gross is $52,269.44, your employer would add about $6,272.33 in super (12% of ordinary earnings), provided you are under the cap.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

What is salary packaging meaning?

Salary packaging (also called salary sacrifice) is an arrangement where you exchange part of your salary for benefits such as a car, additional super contributions, or childcare fees. This reduces your taxable income. The estimates on this page do not include salary packaging; they are based on a simple hourly-to-annual conversion without any salary sacrifice deductions.

How do I calculate my annual salary from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by your weekly hours (usually 38 for full-time) and then by 52 weeks. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour: $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,269.44 per year. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly figure accordingly.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave entitlements. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). The timesheet calculator on this site has a checkbox to add casual loading – never type a rate that already includes it.
