Hourly to Annual Pay Calculator: Salary Packaging NSW Health and Tax Guide

Annual pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours per week and 52 weeks, assuming a standard full-time week with no overtime or penalties.

How to Convert Hourly to Annual Pay

If you have an hourly rate or a salary offer, the basic formula to estimate annual gross pay is straightforward: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. This article explains that formula, the assumptions behind it, and how tax, Medicare, and superannuation fit into the picture. We also cover the National Minimum Wage, award rates, casual loading, and the role of salary packaging NSW Health.

The 38-Hour Week Assumption

Most full-time roles in Australia are based on a 38-hour week, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. When you use our timesheet to convert an hourly rate to annual pay, we assume 38 hours per week unless you enter a different number. For example:

  • $30 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $59,280 per year
  • $50 per hour × 38 hours × 52 weeks = $98,800 per year

If you work part-time or irregular hours, adjust the weekly hours to match your typical schedule. The formula remains the same.

Fortnightly Pay

Many Australian employers pay fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. Using the examples above:

  • $30/hour → weekly $1,140 → fortnightly $2,280
  • $50/hour → weekly $1,900 → fortnightly $3,800

This can help you compare with job advertisements that quote a fortnightly salary.

Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is set by the Fair Work Commission. Many employees are covered by award rates, which are industry-specific minimums that may be higher. Check your award on the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

Casual loading is an additional 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For the minimum wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). When using our timesheet, enter your base hourly rate (without loading) and tick the casual loading checkbox. The calculator will add the 25% automatically.

Superannuation is paid on top of your gross wages. The super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 (2026–27). For example, on a $60,000 salary, your employer contributes an extra $7,200 to your super fund. This is not deducted from your pay – it’s an additional benefit.

Tax and Medicare Levy

Your annual gross pay is the starting point for tax calculations. The Australian Taxation Office uses a progressive resident tax scale for 2026–27:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on excess over $135,000
  • Over $190,000: 45% on excess over $190,000

In addition, most residents pay the Medicare levy of 2% of taxable income. Low-income thresholds apply; for 2025–26 the single reduction threshold is $24,276 (the 2026–27 figure was not confirmed here, so we use the previous year’s threshold). Our calculator estimates tax and Medicare based on these rates.

Example: $70,000 Annual Gross

  • Tax: $4,638 (15% on $26,800 above $18,200) + $7,500 (30% on $25,000 above $45,000) = $12,138
  • Medicare levy (2%): $1,400
  • Total deductions: $13,538
  • Estimated take-home pay: $56,462 per year, or about $4,705 per month

Remember, this does not include HELP repayments, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.

Salary Packaging NSW Health

Salary packaging NSW Health is a popular arrangement for public health employees in New South Wales. It allows you to use pre-tax income to pay for certain expenses, such as a car lease, mortgage, or everyday living costs. This reduces your taxable income, potentially lowering the tax you pay and increasing your take-home pay.

For example, if you earn $80,000 and package $10,000, your taxable income drops to $70,000. Using the tax brackets above, you save $3,000 in tax (30% of $10,000). However, salary packaging is not deducted in our calculator – it shows your gross annual pay and estimated tax without any packaging. For a detailed estimate, see our super and packaging guide.

Important Notes and Limitations

Our annual pay estimate is based on the formula hourly × hours per week × 52. It assumes:

  • The same rate every week
  • No unpaid overtime
  • No penalty rates or allowances
  • No salary sacrifice

Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax uses the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted.

This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax. For precise figures, consult your employer, a registered tax agent, or the Australian Taxation Office.

Questions people ask next

How do I calculate my annual salary from an hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For a standard full-time role, this is hourly × 38 × 52. For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour, annual gross pay is $26.44 × 38 × 52 = $52,245.44. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly figure accordingly. Remember that this calculation assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

What is casual loading and how does it affect my pay?

Casual loading is an extra 25% paid on top of the base hourly rate to compensate for lack of paid leave and other entitlements. For example, the National Minimum Wage for casuals is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 + 25%). When using our timesheet, you enter your base hourly rate and check the casual loading box – do not enter a rate that already includes loading. The annual figure then reflects the loaded rate.

How does salary packaging NSW Health affect my take-home pay?

Salary packaging NSW Health allows eligible employees to use pre-tax income for certain expenses like mortgage payments or cars, reducing your taxable income. This can lower the tax you pay and increase your net pay. However, our calculator does not deduct salary packaging – it shows gross annual pay and estimated tax using the 2026–27 resident scale. For a personalised estimate including packaging, consult your employer or a tax professional.
