Hourly to Annual Pay: How Salary Sacrifice Super Contributions Affect Your Take-Home Pay

For a standard 38-hour week, your annual gross pay is your hourly rate multiplied by 38 hours and 52 weeks, before tax and super.

Understanding Hourly to Annual Conversion

If you earn an hourly wage or are considering a salary offer, converting between hourly and annual pay helps you compare jobs and budget. The basic formula is straightforward: annual gross pay = hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. This assumes you work the same number of hours every week, with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. For full-time employees, the standard week is 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. Using 38 hours gives a consistent benchmark, but you can adjust for your actual hours.

For example, at the National Minimum Wage of $26.44 per hour (from 1 July 2026), a 38-hour week yields $1,004.90 per week and $52,254.80 per year before tax and super. If you work 40 hours, multiply by 40 instead. The fortnightly amount is simply weekly pay × 2 – useful for budgeting if you're paid fortnightly.

Why 38 Hours?

The 38-hour week is the standard for full-time employment under the Fair Work Act. Many awards and agreements use this as the ordinary hours. When you see a salary offer, you can divide by 52 and then by 38 to find the equivalent hourly rate. Our hourly conversion page explains this in more detail.

Minimum Wage, Award Rates, and Casual Loading

Australia has a National Minimum Wage set by the Fair Work Commission. As of 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour for permanent employees. However, many industries have award rates that are higher. Awards cover specific occupations and set minimum pay rates, loadings, and allowances. Always check the relevant award for your job – you can find them on the Fair Work Ombudsman website.

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base rate to compensate for not receiving paid leave. For the National Minimum Wage, that means $33.05 per hour. This loading is included in the casual rate, not added on top of it. On the timesheet, you can toggle a checkbox to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the tool calculates it for you.

Super Guarantee Paid on Top

Employers must pay superannuation guarantee contributions on top of your ordinary earnings. From 1 July 2026, the rate is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. Super is not deducted from your pay; it is an additional cost for your employer. For a full-time worker on the minimum wage, that means an extra $6,270.58 per year into your super fund. The super guarantee applies to both permanent and casual employees, but casual loading is part of ordinary earnings for super purposes.

Tax, Medicare, and Salary Sacrifice

Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) applies progressive tax rates for residents in 2026–27:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income between $18,201 and $45,000
  • 30% on income between $45,001 and $135,000
  • 37% on income between $135,001 and $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus, a Medicare levy of 2% generally applies (with reductions for low-income earners). The tax-free threshold is included. This estimate does not include the Medicare levy surcharge or HELP repayments.

Salary Sacrifice Super Contributions

One way to reduce your taxable income is through salary sacrifice super contributions. You agree with your employer to divert part of your pre-tax salary into your super fund. This lowers your assessable income, so you pay less tax. However, it also reduces your take-home pay. The super guarantee is calculated on your ordinary earnings before salary sacrifice, so your employer still pays 12% on your original salary. Salary sacrifice contributions count towards the concessional contributions cap ($30,000 for 2026–27). If you exceed the cap, you pay extra tax. Always consider your total super contributions (employer plus salary sacrifice) to stay within limits.

For example, if you earn $80,000 per year and salary sacrifice $10,000 into super, your taxable income becomes $70,000. You save tax at your marginal rate (30% in this bracket), but your take-home pay drops by the sacrificed amount minus the tax saved. The ATO provides detailed rules – see our super and packaging page for more.

Using the Timesheet Calculator

Our the timesheet is the home page where you enter your base hourly rate. The calculator shows:

  • Weekly pay (hourly × hours per week)
  • Fortnightly pay (weekly × 2)
  • Annual gross pay (weekly × 52)
  • Estimated tax (using the 2026–27 resident rates with the full tax-free threshold)
  • Medicare levy (2% with single reduction thresholds from 2025–26)
  • Super guarantee (12% on ordinary earnings, up to the maximum contribution base)
  • Take-home pay after tax and Medicare

A checkbox adds 25% casual loading. The result updates instantly. Remember, this is an estimate. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is paid on top. For award-specific rates, check pay guides or reference tables.

Average Earnings vs Your Pay

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) publishes Average Weekly Earnings (AWE). In May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings were $2,083.70 per week, or about $108,352 per year. All employees total earnings (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week, or $82,118 per year. These are averages across all industries and states, not medians for any specific job. Your pay may differ based on your occupation, experience, and location. Use our average pay page for more context.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay shown here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then by 52 weeks. For a full-time employee working 38 hours per week, the formula is: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your annual gross pay before tax, super, and any salary sacrifice arrangements. If you work different hours, adjust the weekly hours accordingly. Our [the timesheet](/) lets you enter your base rate and toggle casual loading.

What is salary sacrifice super contributions and how does it affect my pay?

Salary sacrifice super contributions are amounts you agree to have your employer pay into your super fund from your pre-tax salary. This reduces your taxable income, so you pay less income tax, but it also lowers your take-home pay. The super guarantee (12% from 1 July 2026) is paid on top of your ordinary earnings, not on the sacrificed amount. The Australian Taxation Office caps concessional contributions, including salary sacrifice, at $30,000 per year (2026–27). Always check your total contributions to avoid excess tax.

Does the calculator include casual loading?

Yes. On [the timesheet](/), you can check a box to add 25% casual loading on top of your base hourly rate. This matches the casual loading under the National Minimum Wage and many awards. Do not enter a rate that already includes casual loading; the tool applies it for you. The result shows your casual hourly rate and the corresponding annual and fortnightly figures.
