Hourly to Annual Pay: National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates and Toyota Salary Packaging
For a 38-hour week, multiply your hourly rate by 38 and then by 52 to get your annual gross pay.
Understanding Your Hourly to Annual Conversion
Whether you’re negotiating a new job offer or checking your current pay, converting your hourly rate to an annual figure helps you compare apples with apples. Our hourly conversion tool uses the standard formula: hourly rate × hours per week × 52 weeks. For full-time employees, we assume a 38-hour week, as this is the ordinary hours under the National Employment Standards. If you work different hours, you can adjust the weekly hours in the calculator.
The National Minimum Wage vs Award Rates
The National Minimum Wage (NMW) is the legal floor for all employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. From 1 July 2026, the NMW is $26.44 per hour, which gives a weekly wage of $1,004.90 for 38 hours. Casual employees receive an additional 25% loading, making the casual rate $33.05 per hour.
However, most Australian workers are covered by a modern award or enterprise agreement. Award rates are often higher than the NMW and include specific classifications, penalty rates, and allowances. For example, a retail employee under the General Retail Industry Award may earn more than $26.44 per hour depending on their level. Always check your award via the Fair Work Ombudsman’s pay guides to see your correct minimum rate.
Using the Timesheet Calculator
Our timesheet, the home page, lets you enter your base hourly rate. If you are a casual employee, tick the checkbox to add 25% casual loading on top of that base rate. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading – the calculator adds it for you. The tool then shows your annual gross pay, fortnightly pay (weekly × 2), and an estimate of tax and super.
Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting
Many Australians are paid fortnightly. To find your fortnightly gross pay, simply multiply your weekly pay by two. For a full-time worker on the NMW: $1,004.90 × 2 = $2,009.80 per fortnight. This figure helps you budget for bills and savings. The calculator displays both weekly and fortnightly amounts.
Tax and Superannuation
Your annual gross pay is not what you take home. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) applies progressive tax rates for 2026–27:
- Nil on the first $18,200
- 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
- 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
- 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
- 45% on income above $190,000
Plus, the Medicare levy of 2% generally applies. Our calculator uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds for Medicare, as the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed at the time of this guide. It does not deduct HELP loans, the Medicare levy surcharge, or salary packaging.
Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings. The super guarantee is 12% of your ordinary time earnings, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830 per year. For example, if your annual gross is $60,000, your employer must contribute an extra $7,200 into your super fund. This is not deducted from your pay – it’s an additional benefit.
How Toyota Salary Packaging Fits In
Salary packaging allows you to pay for certain items (like a car, laptop, or childcare) from your pre-tax income, reducing your taxable income and increasing your take-home pay. Toyota salary packaging is a popular option for employees who lease a Toyota vehicle through their employer. While our calculator does not include salary packaging deductions, understanding your gross annual pay is the first step. You can then estimate the tax savings by subtracting the packaged amount from your taxable income. For more details, see our super and packaging page.
Average Earnings vs Your Pay
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Average Weekly Earnings for May 2026 show full-time adult ordinary time earnings of $2,083.70 per week – that’s about $108,352 per year. All employees total earnings (including part-time) average $1,579.20 per week. These are averages, not medians, and they cover all industries and occupations. Your pay may be higher or lower depending on your role, experience, and location. For industry-specific figures, check our average pay reference tables.
Key Points to Remember
- The formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52.
- We assume 38 hours for full-time unless you change it.
- Casual loading is added on top of the base rate – never include it in your entry.
- Super is paid on top of your gross pay, not deducted from it.
- Tax estimates are based on 2026–27 resident rates with the full tax-free threshold.
- Salary packaging like Toyota salary packaging can reduce your taxable income but is not included in this calculator.
