What Is a Salary Sacrifice and How Does It Affect Your Hourly to Annual Pay?

For a full-time employee working 38 hours a week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, and the National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour.

Understanding Hourly to Annual Conversion

If you earn an hourly wage or have received a salary offer, converting between hourly and annual figures helps you compare job opportunities and plan your budget. The standard formula in Australia is:

Annual gross pay ≈ hourly rate × hours per week × 52

This article assumes a full-time week of 38 hours, as defined by the Fair Work Ombudsman. For part-time or casual roles, adjust the hours accordingly. The result is a gross estimate before tax, the Medicare levy, and superannuation.

Why 38 Hours and the Fortnight?

Most full-time awards and agreements in Australia set a 38-hour week. When you know your weekly pay, multiply by 2 to get your fortnightly pay – a common pay cycle. For example, if your hourly rate is $30, your weekly pay is $30 × 38 = $1,140, and your fortnightly pay is $2,280.

National Minimum Wage vs. Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage is set by the Fair Work Commission. From 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week, equating to $1,004.90 per week or $52,254.80 per year. This is the legal minimum for employees not covered by an award or agreement.

However, most industries have award rates that are higher than the minimum. Awards specify minimum pay for particular jobs, including penalty rates, allowances, and overtime. Always check the relevant award on the Fair Work Ombudsman website. The figures in this article are averages or minimums, not a median for your specific job. For job-specific pay, refer to job pay resources.

Casual Loading

Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate. For the National Minimum Wage, the casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). When converting to annual pay, use the loaded rate. Never enter a rate that already includes casual loading into a calculator that adds it separately – always start with the base rate and apply the loading yourself.

Superannuation: Paid on Top

Employers must pay superannuation guarantee contributions of 12% of your ordinary earnings, on top of your salary. This is not deducted from your pay. For the 2026–27 year, the maximum contribution base is $270,830. Super is calculated on your ordinary time earnings, not including overtime. For more details, see super and packaging.

Tax and Take-Home Pay

Income tax for 2026–27 residents uses these brackets:

  • Nil on the first $18,200
  • 15% on income from $18,201 to $45,000
  • 30% on income from $45,001 to $135,000
  • 37% on income from $135,001 to $190,000
  • 45% on income above $190,000

Plus the Medicare levy of 2% (with reductions for low-income earners; the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds are used here as 2026–27 thresholds are not confirmed).

To estimate your after-tax pay, use the take-home pay guide. Remember that salary sacrifice arrangements can reduce your taxable income – see below.

What Is a Salary Sacrifice?

What is a salary sacrifice? It is an agreement with your employer to give up part of your pre-tax salary in exchange for benefits such as additional super contributions, a car lease, or electronic devices. The sacrificed amount is not subject to income tax, which can lower your tax bill. However, it may reduce your super guarantee (since super is based on your ordinary time earnings) and affect other entitlements like leave loading. Always consult the Australian Taxation Office and your employer before entering a salary sacrifice arrangement. For more, see super and packaging.

Average Pay Figures

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) provides average weekly earnings. For May 2026, full-time adult ordinary time earnings averaged $2,083.70 per week (about $108,352 per year). All employees (including part-time) averaged $1,579.20 per week. These are averages, not medians for your specific job. Use average pay to compare.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

What is a salary sacrifice?

A salary sacrifice arrangement lets you give up part of your pre-tax salary in exchange for benefits such as extra super contributions, a car, or electronic devices. The sacrificed amount is not subject to income tax, but it may affect your super guarantee and other entitlements. Always check with your employer and the Australian Taxation Office before entering an arrangement.

How do I convert my hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52. For a standard full-time week of 38 hours, use: hourly rate × 38 × 52. This gives your annual gross pay before tax and super. Remember that this formula assumes the same rate every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances.

Does casual loading affect my annual pay calculation?

Yes. Casual employees receive a 25% loading on top of the base hourly rate as compensation for not receiving paid leave. When converting to annual pay, you should use the loaded rate (base × 1.25) in the formula. For example, the National Minimum Wage casual rate is $33.05 per hour ($26.44 × 1.25). Never type a rate that already includes casual loading into a calculator that adds it again.
