How to Convert Hourly Rate to Annual Salary: Tax, Medicare, and Meal Entertainment Card Salary Packaging

For a 38-hour week, annual gross pay is hourly rate × 38 × 52, with super paid on top and tax and Medicare deducted.

Converting Your Hourly Rate to Annual Pay

If you’re paid by the hour or considering a salary offer, the first step is to convert your hourly rate into an annual figure. The standard formula is simple: hourly rate × hours per week × 52. For a full-time employee working 38 hours each week, that becomes hourly × 38 × 52. This gives you your gross annual pay before tax, the Medicare levy, and any salary packaging arrangements.

For example, if your hourly rate is $30.00, your annual gross would be $30 × 38 × 52 = $59,280. This assumes you work the same hours every week with no unpaid overtime, penalty rates, or allowances. It’s a starting point for budgeting and comparing job offers.

Why 38 Hours?

The Fair Work Ombudsman and the Fair Work Commission treat 38 hours as the standard full-time week for most awards and the National Minimum Wage. If you work fewer or more hours, adjust the formula accordingly. For part-time or casual roles, your weekly hours may vary, so use your typical weekly hours instead.

Understanding the National Minimum Wage and Award Rates

The National Minimum Wage from 1 July 2026 is $26.44 per hour, or $1,004.90 per week for 38 hours. This is the legal floor for employees not covered by an award or registered agreement. If you’re covered by an award, your minimum hourly rate will likely be higher. Award rates are set by the Fair Work Commission and vary by industry and role. They often include additional entitlements like penalty rates for weekends or late shifts.

It’s important to check your specific award or agreement rather than relying on a general average. The Australian Bureau of Statistics publishes average weekly earnings, but these are averages across all full-time adults ($2,083.70 per week in May 2026) and all employees ($1,579.20 per week including part-time). These figures are not medians for your job. Use them as a broad benchmark only.

Casual Loading and Superannuation

If you’re a casual employee, your hourly rate typically includes a 25% casual loading on top of the base rate. For the National Minimum Wage, that means $33.05 per hour (including loading). When using our calculator, you should enter your base hourly rate and then check the box to add 25% casual loading. Do not enter a rate that already includes loading.

Superannuation is paid on top of your ordinary earnings at 12% (the super guarantee rate). For example, if your annual gross is $59,280, your employer must contribute an additional $7,113.60 to your super fund, up to the maximum contribution base of $270,830. Super is not deducted from your pay; it’s an extra cost for the employer. Our calculator estimates super at 12% of ordinary earnings only.

Tax and Medicare on Your Annual Figure

Once you have your annual gross, you can estimate your tax and Medicare levy using the 2026–27 resident tax rates. The Australian Taxation Office applies these brackets:

  • $0 – $18,200: nil
  • $18,201 – $45,000: 15% on the excess over $18,200
  • $45,001 – $135,000: 30% on the excess over $45,000
  • $135,001 – $190,000: 37% on the excess over $135,000
  • $190,001 and above: 45% on the excess over $190,000

In addition, the Medicare levy is generally 2% of your taxable income. For 2025–26, the single reduction thresholds are used here because the 2026–27 thresholds were not confirmed. If your income is below a certain level, the levy may be reduced or waived. Our calculator applies the full 2% unless you qualify for an exemption.

How Meal Entertainment Card Salary Packaging Can Help

Salary packaging allows you to sacrifice part of your pre-tax salary for certain benefits, reducing your taxable income. One common option is a meal entertainment card salary packaging arrangement, where you can pay for meals, entertainment, and related expenses with pre-tax dollars. This lowers the amount of income subject to tax and the Medicare levy. For example, if you package $5,000 for meal entertainment, your taxable income drops by that amount, potentially saving you hundreds in tax depending on your bracket. Not all employers offer this, and there are caps under fringe benefits tax rules. Always check with your employer or a tax professional before entering an agreement.

Fortnightly Pay and Budgeting

If you’re paid fortnightly, your gross pay is simply your weekly pay multiplied by two. For a 38-hour week at $30 per hour, your weekly gross is $1,140, so your fortnightly gross is $2,280. After tax and Medicare, your take-home pay will be lower. Our calculator shows both weekly and fortnightly estimates to help you budget.

Important Disclaimer

Annual pay here is hourly rate × hours per week × 52. It assumes the same rate every week, no unpaid overtime, no penalty rates, no allowances, and no salary sacrifice. Super is estimated at 12% of ordinary earnings only, paid on top, and stops at the $270,830 maximum contribution base. Tax is the 2026–27 resident scale with the full tax-free threshold. Medicare uses the 2025–26 single reduction thresholds because the 2026–27 reduction thresholds were not confirmed here. HELP, the Medicare levy surcharge, and salary packaging are not deducted. This is an estimate, not a determination of your pay or tax.

Questions people ask next

How do I calculate annual salary from my hourly rate?

Multiply your hourly rate by the number of hours you work each week, then multiply by 52. For a standard full-time role, we assume 38 hours per week, so annual gross = hourly × 38 × 52. This gives a base figure before tax, Medicare, and super. Remember that super is paid on top of this amount, not deducted from it.

Does meal entertainment card salary packaging reduce my taxable income?

Yes, if your employer offers salary packaging, a meal entertainment card can let you pay for meals and entertainment with pre-tax dollars, reducing your taxable income. This can lower the tax and Medicare levy you owe. However, the exact benefit depends on your employer’s arrangement and any fringe benefits tax caps. Our calculator does not include salary packaging, so you should check with your employer or a tax professional.

What is the difference between award rates and the National Minimum Wage?

The National Minimum Wage is the legal minimum for all employees not covered by an award or agreement. As of 1 July 2026, it is $26.44 per hour for a 38-hour week. Award rates are set by the Fair Work Commission for specific industries or occupations and are often higher. They may also include penalty rates, allowances, and overtime. Your actual pay may be above the minimum if your award or agreement says so.
